The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially rolled back its directive to mandate a flat ₦50,000 fee for WAEC and NECO candidates starting from the 2027 academic session.

The initial policy aimed to harmonize exam costs to match rising inflationary pressures and infrastructure logistics.
However, the steep price increase, which doubled the previous charges met intense pushback from labor unions, student organizations and prominent leaders who warned it would spike the out-of-school drop-out rate. Critics branded the move as economically detached from the current financial realities facing Nigerian households.
In response to the friction, the Ministry of Education withdrew the initial circular.
The government confirmed the price adjustment is entirely suspended until extensive deliberations are held with parent associations and education stakeholders to ensure a more balanced approach.
