SMEDAN Announces ₦500 Million Zero-Interest Loan Application for Small Businesses

High interest rates, strict collateral demands, and tough bank conditions have long made borrowing money difficult for small business owners in Nigeria.

To ease this financial burden, the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), led by Director-General Charles Odii, launched a ₦500 Million Zero-Interest Grow Fund.

If you run a small shop, an artisan workshop, or a production unit, here is what you need to know about how this zero-interest facility works, the application timeline, and how to position your business to benefit.

What Makes the SMEDAN Grow Fund Different?

Unlike typical commercial bank loans that charge steep interest rates or ask for landed property as collateral, the SMEDAN Grow Fund focuses entirely on accessibility.

  • Zero Interest (0%): You repay only the exact principal amount borrowed over a flexible repayment period.
  • Flexible Capital Usage: Borrowers can use the capital to restock inventory, purchase equipment, or secure workspaces.
  • Revolving Structure: As early beneficiaries repay their loans, the capital returns to the fund pool to be re-issued to more business owners.

Application Deadline: Is There a Closing Date?

Important Notice: The SMEDAN Grow Fund does NOT have a single fixed closing deadline. Applications and disbursements operate strictly on a continuous, rolling basis.

Because the fund is structured as a revolving facility, funding is released in continuous batches:

  1. Rolling Intake: Applications remain open throughout the year through participating channels.
  2. Tranche Allocation: Funds are allocated to vetted groups in batches. Once a batch fills up, subsequent applicants are automatically rolled into the next funding cycle as loan repayments replenish the pool.
  3. Local Group Timelines: While SMEDAN itself does not set an online countdown timer, individual trade unions or cooperatives may set internal collection cut-offs to compile their verified list of members for each tranche.

The Catch: You Cannot Apply as an “Individual” Online

Many entrepreneurs get stuck searching for a direct online application form. However, SMEDAN does not disburse these funds directly to unbacked personal bank accounts.

To prevent loan diversion and eliminate rigid collateral demands, SMEDAN uses an Association-Based Lending Model. The agency partners directly with registered trade unions, market associations, co-operatives, and Business Membership Organisations (BMOs).

Your association handles internal vetting, acts as your guarantor, and coordinates repayment directly with SMEDAN.

3 Steps to Positioning Your Business for SMEDAN Loan

1. Join a Recognized Cooperative or Trade Union

If you operate independently, consider joining a registered cooperative society or trade association in your industry or local market. Independent applicants without group backing cannot access this specific zero-interest facility.

2. Verify Your Business Documentation

Even within a cooperative, basic identification is required. Ensure you have:

  • An active National Identification Number (NIN) and BVN.
  • Proof of business location or market stall membership.
  • SMEDAN MSME Registration (you can register your business for free at smedan.gov.ng or through the SMEDAN ICSS portal).

3. Engage Your Nearest SMEDAN State Hub

Visit the SMEDAN desk or hub in your state to confirm which registered trade groups and cooperatives in your local area are currently onboarded for the latest Grow Fund disbursement tranches.

Beware of online scammers claiming they can “approve” a SMEDAN Grow Fund loan for a fee. SMEDAN does not charge upfront processing fees, and legitimate access is managed strictly through verified cooperative and official agency channels.
