GoLemon, the Lagos-based digital grocery delivery startup founded by former Paystack executives, has officially announced the closure of its operations after 28 months in service.
Launched in 2024 by Yinka Adewuyi, Abiola Showemimo, Abdulrahman Jogbojogbo, and Gbadebo Gbade-Oyelakin, the venture aimed to transform urban grocery shopping by connecting households directly to farmers and manufacturers, effectively cutting out expensive middlemen. Over its operational lifecycle, the company delivered over ₦2.5 billion ($1.8 million) in groceries across tens of thousands of orders in Lagos.
Primary Reasons Behind the Closure
Despite strong user adoption, unit-level profitability, and strategic moves, such as partnering with delivery giant Chowdeck to supply dark stores, Go Lemon faced severe macroeconomic and structural headwinds:
- Funding Runway Exhaustion: The startup confirmed that despite ongoing conversations with potential investors and strategic partners, it was unable to secure fresh venture backing in time to cover its fixed infrastructure costs before running out of cash reserves.
- High Fixed Operating Costs: GoLemon built its own “grocery infrastructure”—running dedicated warehouses, cold-chain storage facilities, and customized fulfillment technology. While individual orders were profitable, total order volumes could not scale fast enough to absorb the ongoing operational overhead.
- Macroeconomic Pressures: Operating in Nigeria’s quick-commerce sector proved challenging due to rapid currency devaluation, high food inflation, escalating logistics expenses, and tight consumer spending margins.
Transition and Staff Support
The company stopped taking new customer orders on July 29, 2026. GoLemon confirmed that all pending user refunds have been resolved, with customer support remaining open through in-app channels until August 2, 2026.
To support its 33 employees through the transition, the startup announced that approximately 20% of its team has already landed new roles, while management is actively connecting remaining staff in engineering, product, operations, and finance to hiring partners across the ecosystem.
