His resignation coincides with intensified investigations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Lagos Inland Revenue Service (LIRS). Okubanjo however stated that he had resigned weeks before the controversy became public.

The situation escalated following accusations on X by HackSultan that Bento failed to remit employees’ income taxes and pension contributions.

In a message to investors, Okubanjo acknowledged that Bento had been struggling since 2024, attributing the company’s financial difficulties to inefficiencies in Nigeria’s tax system rather than his leadership. He has made the company available for acquisition, relinquishing all his equity and debt, and suggested that a fresh approach could revitalize the product.

Following his exit from Bento Africa, Okubanjo seems to have moved on with his newly launched venture, Ada AI- an AI-powered sales assistant.
