As the cost of living continues to rise, many Nigerians are facing challenges of making ends meet, let alone building wealth. However, with the right mindset, strategies and financial habits, you can break free from the challenges of limited income and pave the path towards financial freedom.

Get ready to embark on a transformative journey towards a brighter financial future as we look into practical steps, valuable tips and trusted resources that will empower you to maximize your earnings, minimize your expenses, invest wisely and ultimately gain financial freedom, regardless of your income level.

1. Control Debt:

The first step to financial freedom as a minimum wage earner in Nigeria is your intentionality in controlling unnecessary debts, most especially high interest debts.

It is very difficult for a Nigerian to survive with a monthly income of 33,000 NGN. However, taking loans for consumption could put you in financial distress. In paying off your debts(if you have any), ensure you prioritize the payment of debts with the highest interest rates.

2. Save Money:

After controlling your debts, the next step to achieving financial freedom is to save money and be frugal in spending, by minimizing your expenses. Stick to your budget, focus on meeting your needs only, and practice delayed gratification for your wants.

As you save money, avoid friends who may negatively influence your spending habits and do not make financial decisions to impress people. Also, ensure you save money first, before you spend money.

3. Have a Family Farm:

You will agree with me that many Nigerians spend 50% to 80% of their income on Consumption since the exchange rate became unstable in the last 3 years.

Having a farm on a fertile land within your compound to cultivate crops or rear poultry animals will save you the cost of buying some basic agricultural products like tomatoes, pepper, vegetables, yam, plantain, corn, eggs, chicken, etc. Excess harvested products can be sold to outsiders for some cash.

4. Seek Financial Knowledge:

Take financial literacy courses, read books and join communities to expand your mindset on budgeting, saving, investing and wealth building.

The biggest investment you can make is to invest in your financial knowledge for a brighter future.

5. Learn a Global In-Demand Skill:

Learning global in-demand skills like software development, product management, product designing, business analysis, website development, data analysis and content creation gives you the flexibility to work remotely or hybrid.

You may also get the opportunity to work for International companies, who will pay you in foreign currencies.

By having these high demand skills, you can also work for two or more companies remotely, while delivering your tasks effectively.

6. Create Multiple Streams of Income:

Having more than one stream of income will help you earn better in this unstable economy.

Earning both active income and passive incomes will help you achieve financial freedom.

An active income is an income that requires maximum time, skill and labor to earn. An example of active income is salary. On the other hand, a passive income is an income that requires minimal or no labor to earn and maintain.

Let us delve into the various passive incomes you can earn.

a. Dividend Income:

Dividend Income is a type of income earned periodically by being a shareholder of a limited liability company. It is however safe to own shares of Companies regulated by the Security and Exchange Commission. Shareholders earn dividend income based on the number of shares they own.

Dividend income may also vary in amount and payment duration based on the profitability, corporate governance and regulations of a Company.

b. Capital Gain Income:

Capital Gain Income is a type of income earned from appreciation of assets, which may include houses, lands, cars or stocks.

The capital gain income is the difference between the acquisition cost and the selling price of the asset.

c. Royalty Income:

Royalty Income is an income earned by persons or companies for their intellectual property, which may include trademarks, patents and copyrights.

A royalty income is earned by generating a license agreement in which the licensee pays for the right to use the licensor intellectual property or the licensor is paid royalty income as a percentage of sales.

d. Interest Income:

Interest Income is the compensation on funds provided for another party to use in interest-bearing assets. This type of income is earned from deposits and lending out funds in the form of investments.

Nigerians can earn interest income from savings accounts, fixed deposit accounts, bonds and debentures.

e. Rental Income:

This type of income is earned periodically by an individual or corporate entity from leasing or renting out a property to people. Nigerians can earn rental income from leasing or renting of houses, shops, hotels, hostels, event halls.

f. Profit Income:

This type of income is earned by an individual or business after sales. The total expenses are deducted from the total revenue in order to ascertain the profit made from a transaction.

You now know the 6 types of incomes you can earn.

Nigerians can earn profit income from side hustles like catfish rearing, POS services, commissions on real estate sales and other side hustles.

Those who can afford to own businesses like lounges, restaurants, petrol stations and malls will also earn profit income from their establishments.

You may also need to join various online communities to learn from experts and mentors, so as to gain more knowledge that will help you earn passive income in the above-mentioned areas.

7. Control Your Giving:

If a giver is not careful, a beggar would build house before the giver. Some persons are financially distressed today because of uncontrollable giving.

At your early stage of financial stability, resist the regular urge to prove to family and friends that you are now financially stable by giving public donations and regular giveaways.

Instead, invest and ensure your donations are passive incomes from your investments and businesses, and not your salary or life savings.

8. Explore Clean Energy Options and Cost-Saving Appliances:

As you earn multiple streams of income, the cost of energy can be draining. You will agree with me that the energy cost in Nigeria has increased due to the recent subsidy removal and unstable foreign exchange rate.

Do you seek to achieve financial freedom while enjoying a reliable and affordable power supply? If yes, then you should explore clean energy options by owning a mini solar, installing solar panels, purchasing Inverters or other clean energy alternatives.

Some cost-saving appliances that would reduce recurring expenses may include electric blender, boiling ring, electric cookers and microwave ovens.

9. Always Reinvest:

As you earn income from multiple streams, ensure you reinvest part of your passive income in assets, as this is the pathway to build wealth.

10. Set Long-term Financial Goals:

Set long-term goals and be focused on achieving those goals.

Now, ask yourself these questions;

“How much passive income do I want to be earning annually in the next 3 years?”

“How many landed properties do I want to own in the next 5 years?”

Setting long term goals will help you stay focused as you allocate your income into diverse opportunities.

In conclusion, achieving financial freedom as a minimum wage earner in Nigeria requires a strategic approach and discipline.

Start by avoiding debt, controlling your expenses, saving money and investing wisely. Seek opportunities to increase your income through side hustles or acquiring new skills and prioritize long-term financial goals.

Also note that patience, discipline and perseverance are key, as small steps taken consistently can lead to a significant progress towards attaining financial freedom in Nigeria.
