In February 2025, MTN Nigeria implemented a significant increase in its data plan prices, following a 50% tariff hike approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). This move has sparked widespread criticism from subscribers and consumer advocacy groups, who argue that the increases exceed the approved threshold and lack transparency.
Key changes include the 1.5GB monthly plan being replaced by a 1.8GB plan at ₦1,500, up from ₦1,000. The 15GB plan rose from ₦4,500 to ₦6,500, and the 20GB plan increased from ₦5,500 to ₦7,500. Notably, the 15GB weekly digital bundle saw a 200% increase, jumping from ₦2,000 to ₦6,000, which MTN later acknowledged as a mistake and reversed after public outcry.
The NCC approved the tariff adjustment on January 20, 2025, citing rising operational costs and the need to sustain the telecommunications industry. However, the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS) has threatened legal action, arguing that the decision was made without adequate consultation with stakeholders.
In response to the backlash, MTN issued a public apology, stating, “We know how upsetting it must have been to suddenly wake up to a 200% increase on your favourite digital bundle… Let’s just say na mistake.” The company emphasized its commitment to providing affordable services and maintaining customer trust .
As of now, other major telecom operators like Airtel, Globacom, and 9mobile have not implemented similar data price increases, though they have adjusted SMS charges in line with the approved hike. The situation remains fluid, with ongoing discussions between regulators, operators, and consumer groups.
